Since 1946 is staged in the historic setting of Foligno, this ancient custom dating back to the equestrian competition in 1613, when it was made during Carnival.
Proposed with the aim of giving a feast in Foligno throughout the city, where you can find peace and harmony to which the public had been deprived because of the war, the "Giostra della Quintana" has become a highly respected event appeal to an increasingly large and enthusiastic even tourists.
For months Foligno gets ready for final race - saturday June 16: horses and riders are ready to get on track to win the Palio, which will be award to one of the TEN DISTRICTS (RIONI) participants. The "Campo de li Giochi" is filled with an audience cheering, assisting with bated breath for the decisive race: the winner is the rider who manages to put more rings with his lance, galloping towards the "Quintana" that keeps them in right hand while holding a shield in his left hand; Quintana is just the name of this statue rotating solid walnut which is the god Mars.
The historical period referred to in the Tournament of the Quintana moves from 1580 to 1620, with Spanish-style costumes that create a wonderful parade.
Made strictly according to the stylistic recovered thanks to a meticulous historical research, the streets of Foligno seen pull bodices, doublets, capes, cloaks, velvet and vintage lace, worn from 1000 and more people.
Important as much as the final race, the historical parade of the Quintana aims to be the official presentation to the public of the event in its entirety: ladies and gentlemen, horses and horsemen, priori, all the representatives of the ten districts in full force, accompanied by drummers and trumpeters to animate the atmosphere, will parade through the streets of the historical center of Foligno on the evening of Friday, June 15.
